Interview Tip: The STAR Treatment

Results- Explain the results of your actions

Taking a Risk

The civilian hiring and selection process is not always cut and dry. The largest dynamic and unreliable factor in our process is us, people.

Case in point, while sourcing for an entry level position at the company, I came across a resume of a talented banker. Momentarily I question, “Why would he be looking for an entry level position?”   I happened to notice the candidate had a military background as well as industry experience.  Being that I had friends in the military, I thought to extend a call to this candidate.  After speaking with him to learn about his experience, I quickly identified that he was overqualified for the position he applied for.  Then, I referred him to another position at a neighboring location.   He willingly interviewed with the manager on a Saturday and has been a great employee of ours ever since. Making a Game Plan to Find Work

I haven’t spoken to anyone who hasn’t found the process of separation to be complicated and frustrating.  Unlike everything else in the military, there isn’t a manual or regulation to tell you what to do.  You can attend career transition classes, figure out what paperwork you need to submit, but the transition is yours.  And after years of being told what to do, it can be pretty scary to make a big decision on your own.
