To look at the character of an individual, you have to go deeper than just one thing they say. Employers who are interested in bringing somebody on board with their company are more than likely going to research candidates online to see further into their character.
Social Media opens these doors, but also gives an open door for the interviewer to get a good look into the character of the company as well.
Reading a mission statement and an “about” section on a website is good, but to get a better idea of who they are, here’s some quick tips.
Most companies will provide links on their corporate website indicating where you can find them on specific social sites. As you go to these websites the first thing you’ll want to do is take some time to read through a good chunk of their postings (read them in order of their posting). Some companies are very good at keeping a consistent stream of content and therefore are going to give you a better idea of how they function and what’s been new.
Example:
Companies that post fun and personal content along with corporate achievements may indicate a company that prides itself on being a fun and creative place to work for. Most likely, they’re going to look for someone who fits that picture and who will be authentic and engaging in an interview.
By reading deep into their posts you may find pieces of information that can become great conversation topics as well as show the interviewer that you’ve taken the time to dig into their company history.
Look for mentions of:
- Awards
- Acknowledgements
- Press Releases
Little things like this will help not only create great dialogue and show the company you care enough about them, but also give you an idea of whether this is the company you want to work for.
